Wikipedia

Jai alai

Jai alai (: [ˈxai aˈlai]) is a sport involving bouncing a ball off a walled-in space by accelerating it to high speeds with a hand-held wicker cesta. It is a variation of Basque pelota. The term jai alai, coined by Serafin Baroja in 1875, is also often loosely applied to the fronton (the open-walled playing area) where matches take place. The game, whose name means "merry festival" in Basque, is called cesta-punta ("basket tip") in the Basque Country. The sport is played worldwide, but especially in Spain, France, and in various Latin American countries.

Examples of use of jai-alai
1. Callahan was a 45–year–old former president of Miami–based World Jai–Alai.
2. He seized on some compromise language in the bill making exceptions for jai alai and horse racing.
3. Wheeler came to suspect that Callahan was skimming profits from World Jai Alai for the Winter Hill Gang.
4. Wexler had tried unsuccessfully to include exemptions for dog racing and jai alai, both popular in Florida.
5. Last year, Florida voters agreed to change the state constitution to allow slot machines at South Florida tracks and jai–alai frontons.
